One of the most iconic lines said by Kareena Kapoor in Jab we met and is a a beacon for self love and confidence .When I watched the movie I didn’t pay that much attention ,one was caught up in the movie and the beauty .. However close to twenty years later , one can safely say that it was it is needed by all of us . All of us keep on asking for external validation and acceptance from our closest relationships. It is always acknowledgement we are hankering for and asking for approval.
It is a struggle for this generation to fit into having the perfect skin ,perfect body and the perfect hair.no one wants frizzy , curly ,one color hair,it has to have baylage streaking , ombré and has to be as straight as sin .
Have you noticed we might be facing the worst recession , highest rate of inflation but the salons and the beauty industry never fail? Even with the war ,prices didn’t dip. All of the clever marketing is done to prey on our insecurities and our lack of confidence in our own self and our physical self. Age affects and comes to all of us ,but we now have a laser/ procedure for every part of our body and so that we visually come across as appealing and beautiful.
What would happen if we focused on our morals ,values and our principles more than our physical attributes . At a store yesterday , a bunch of girls were asking for concealer , highlighter and some other makeup. Do young girls need all this ? I know I am going to sound old school and very much like a conservative granny right out of the hillibillies show but did we all do this?
All of us grew up with strict boundaries ,with more focus on studying and books and life rather than this conspicuous consumption of beauty products .We all had a fixed budget , no access to social media and we treated the opposite gender as human beings and didn’t have our knickers in twist over them! All over the world countries are limiting the access to social media and have realised the damage that it has done to the minds of the next generation .The vulnerability and the imprint on bothe the sexes,boy and girls is equal and they are impacted to. Look attractive for the other and the relentless bullying if they don’t conform. I left school 35 odd years ago and am still told about the belt I tied tight so that I would look thin.No one talks about my attributes !
It takes a lifetime for all of us to be comfortable in our skin , where we don’t bother about body shaming or our skin , our curly hair !The screen writer needs a pat on the back for being so thoughtful and to put a meaningful dialog which has sunk in now . External validation in a world that is shallow, weak in its principles and wears masks that are like the onion ,peel one and another comes out! Every day we share /read quotes and affirmations to make ourselves stronger and better but till we don’t believe in all this we can’t make it happen. Repeat and repeat this mantra earlier in life and not like me who learnt it late in life .
